La méthode du «différenciateur sémantique» permet d'étudier la signification du mot «mathématiques» qui «réside dans l'impression sémantique qu'il évoque chez des personnes s'exprimant à leur sujet, cette impression correspondant à une certaine «attitude» pratique ou affective (disposition à agir ou état émotionnel); les liaisons associatives verbales à ce mot, en retour, codent ou connotent au moins une partie de cette impression sémantique et constituent ainsi une certaine signification connotative du mot».
